Pumpkins and other Fall things like roasts and strep

Pumpkins!

This weekend was absolutely beautiful. It was sunny and warm. We got a lot of things done, including more unpacking and organizing (of the basement mainly). I even had some time to buy some decorative gourds and pumpkins for the porch and made a roast and some cookies. So Fall! So suburban!

Rib eye roast. Easy: pierce fat with knife and insert garlic cloves; rub with rosemary and olive oil; season; sear all sides in a pan; roast in oven on low (250 degrees F) for three to four hours (for an approximately 4.5 lb roast, medium)

Roasted root vegetables: quarter carrots, potatoes, celery, parsnips any other root veg of your liking, along with onions; toss with rosemary and olive oil; roast on 300 degrees F for about an hour.

Au jus: deglaze pan that you seared the meat in with some beef or veal stock; bring to a boil; add cup of red wine; reduce to half; strain; return to pan and add butter and stir til glossy.

I like using this old cake plate as a cookie "jar"

Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies (from a mix); I sprinkled sea salt on them while they were cooling-- amazing!

In other news, I went to the doctor's during lunch today and found out I have strep. Dangit! Fortunately, babies rarely get strep. But to be sure, I'm taking the Delicious to his new pediatrician tomorrow. Bonus that the office is just down the street and within walking distance. I digress, but I must say living in the town limits of this suburb is almost as good (in terms of walkability) as living downtown in the city!

Ugh! I hate strep. I used to get it a lot in my early 20s. Had to have my tonsils removed. Hope you feel better soon!

What a great way to celebrate your birthday! G is such a thoughtful and sweet hubby.

Loved all the food pictures and of course, pictures of Mr. Delicious. He is getting so big and I love that he already got his first kiss from a girl. What a charmer ;)
