Happy Mother's Day

To all the moms and moms-to-be, hope you had a great day!

My first Mother's Day was sweet and low key. G took me and my mom to brunch. It was great except for the elderly hostess at the club who kissed the baby...ON THE MOUTH. Another lady pawed him on her way out. I don't consider myself a neurotic or nervous mom, but I really do not like older ladies touching Delicious. They have weird notions about what is appropriate for babies and children, and it typically involves liquor as a salve, germy lips on the face or dirty, arthritic fingers in the mouth. Really? (Sorry, had to get that out.)

The rest of the day was nice. G went for a walk with Delicious as I napped (because when G asked what I wanted as a gift, I said a bucket of sleep). I enjoyed the afternoon playing with Baby, and some quiet moments feeding him, smelling his babyness. It was a nice day topped off with a really sweet card from G and a bouquet of flowers that perfume the whole house!

 Sometimes I can't believe I'm a mom

So delicious

You don't sound neurotic. I'd be worried about the old ladies gobbling him up whole since he's so Delicious and all. ;-)

Sounds like you had the perfect Mother's Day! Your baby is so adorable; can't blame the old ladies for wanting to touch him. But kissies on the mouth..EW!

He is so adorable! I can't believe that creepy old lady kissed him ON THE MOUTH. My stomach just turned. Sorry about the weirdos, but I'm glad you had a nice low-key mother's day!

This last weekend Mr and I were watching a show on HGTV & during said show a random person from the design team touched this gals pregnant tummy. I said to Mr, "ok is that seriously what happens when preggers? Random people think they can 'pat or pet' your growing tummy? How 'invading my private space!' I am not going to do so well when/if that happens to me." Question, what is your reaction when people invade your/D's space?

That last picture of G, oops I mean D {:)} is adorable. I can't get over how much he changes in each post. And a very Happy Mother's Day to you!!!

Thank you, sweet ladies!

Marissa-I'm usually too stunned or the offender is too quick for me to really react. I hate myself for not doing anything, except be passive aggressive after the fact. The only time I really did something pre-emptive was when we were going for Delicious' two week doctor's visit and an old lady in the elevator starting moving towards him, hands reaching for his face, and I said "Don't touch his face." I surprised myself. But that hasn't happened again. I think I need to reconnect with that in myself. People are so intrusive, sometimes! At the end of the day, I know they mean well and appreciate that they find my baby cute. But really...

I think your fear of strangers/germs would be more understandable if you didn't limit your disgust to just elderly ladies. You might want to include the following:

The Homeless
The Crippled
The Arthritic population in general
Elderly Men
DINKS in general

Seriously, I understand the protective nature of young mothers. I cannot understand your venomous rant. Don't be so unkind. It's not attractive. As for the rest of you (previous comments) - you need a dose of maturity as well.

Anon: Thanks for the censorship on my personal blog. Honestly, your comment was pretty well written, so I can't be too angry. And your point is well taken. I shouldn't be so unkind. HOWEVER, I will say, that perhaps I should have framed it in terms of data points, how it has only been older ladies who have ever a) put their finger in my baby's mouth; b) as a perfect stranger, kissed him on the mouth; c) suggest liquor to calm him. And perhaps it's a generational thing, how they feel it's okay to do things that I would never fathom doing to a perfect stranger, let alone a vulnerable infant, my being a "young" mother notwithstanding. I would definitely add the homeless and crippled, old men, and for sure DINKS, to my list of people who disgust me, but none of them has ever done anything as intrusive as I described. So...

Hi P! Looks like things are going really well! Happy Belated Mother's Day!

Dear Anon, If you were to read this post in context with her other blog posts, you wouldn't necessarily characterize this post as "venomous." I find her to be quite fair in her comments about others. In addition, she doesn't just dislike elderly women for who they are. She dislikes what they do. There is a difference.

I agree with Anon #1. The tricky part of your comments ARE the generalizations of the elderly... because three old ladies did some not-so-attractive things, to lump ALL old ladies into one camp is not so cool. It's as dangerous as lumping all people of a certain race because you've experienced a small handful of those people doing certain things. In my opinion, you've planted a seed of stereotype. How do you feel when people say "Asians are bad drivers"? Not so good, I imagine.

And Wendy..."she doesn't just dislike elderly women for who they are. She dislikes what they do." Insert the word "women", or "black people", or "gay people" where you wrote "elderly women" and I hope it makes you pause and think differently about that comment. Yikes! This is a hot button one today! Thanks, Creature, for your blog. I'm not an avid reader (of any blog, mind you) but read yours every once in a while. I really enjoy your photography!
